Skyclad literally means "clad only by the sky". In other words naked. It is not surprising that many witches perform their rituals this way as witchcraft is such a nature oriented discipline.
Nudity within ritual enhances both the psychic and the spiritual as well as conveying a sense of equality between the participants. Clothing, in the world we live in, can and does create class and social differences. This is something that both Wiccans and witches seek to avoid - hence the nudity. Everyone is seen as being equal. It is however, not uncommon for ritual jewelry to be worn. This approach to ritual is common throughout history in many unrelated beliefs.
Of course it is not very practicable to conduct outdoor rituals in the nude during winter but for the rest of the year (providing there is privacy) it is quite possible. Indoor rnude rituals can be conducted at any time. This emphasis on nudity encourages the gawkers of the world of course hence the need for privacy. Onlookers wishing to experience the mystical is one thing but onlookers wanting to get a "good look" and experience a vicarious thrill are something else entirely and are obviously unwelcome.
Witchcraft is actually quite pro sex but never at the cost of spirituality. Spirit and the physical are very closely entwined but one is not emphasised over the other. The freedom of performing ritual naked under the full moon is very exhilarating and enhances the feeling of closeness to the gods.
Many practitioners feel that being skyclad allows them to work with energy without mundane interference while others don't feel that being clothed hampers their work. The main idea for any group is to be comfortable when working together. If being nude makes you, or any member of your group uncomfortable, then a simple robe is probably the best way to go. There is no law that says you have to be skyclad to perform effective magick.
Although clothing is not uncommon it is best to use clothing that is preserved for ritual use only. Using everyday working clothes would be a mistake as you would be taking the everyday negativity into the circle with you. This would affect the quality of your magickal workings.
There is no one right way, or wrong way, where being skyclad is concerned. Do whatever feels right to you. |
